Alumni Joel Fullerton at Geffen TheaterPosted by: nancym 2 years, 3 months ago
CoSA recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a big, fun gala! We reached out to alumni and parents all over the country, and it has been exciting to hear what our alumni are up to!
Joel Fullerton, Musical Theatre class of 2006, headed off to the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and now finds himself back on the West Coast. Here's an update from Joel:
"I am now working at the Geffen Playhouse as Stage Supervisor. I started this position officially this past fall, but my first show here was Wait Until Dark in 2013. After graduating from NYU in 2010, I stayed in NYC auditioning and working as a freelance carpenter. I had a few other jobs, that were all boring and not theatre related. In 2011, I met a wonderful woman named Cassandra Orrantia, who I am now engaged to. She graduated from NYU in 2013 and we made the decision to move to LA together. Head over heels, I knew that everything was going to work out for the best, and California would be that land of fortune.
I started working at the Geffen Playhouse within my first week living in LA. A friend of a friend was working as the Assistant Technical Director at the time, and through this connection, I discovered they were looking for someone to work backstage as run crew. I jumped on the opportunity and before I knew it, I was backstage on Wait Until Dark handing Alison Pill props every night. After that, I worked strike and load in for the next project, which was a one woman show, I'll Eat You Last, An Evening with Sue Mengers, starring Bette Midler. Since then I have worked on over a dozen shows here in a variety of capacities, which led to the creation of my position on staff. In some ways, I invented my position on staff here. There's a lesson for the COSA students. Hard work and dedication do get noticed, and will get you work... paying work with benefits!
As Stage Supervisor, I oversee the crew during productions and assist with all load-ins and strikes in the main theatre at the Geffen Playhouse, the Gil Gates Theatre. This space seats about 500 and is our main performance space. I also oversee the set up and programming of our automated set pieces, and will assist the Assistant Technical Director on other special projects on the set, like rain systems or drains.
I love working at the Geffen Playhouse. It has been a dream come true for me. CoSA is what set me on the path to where I am now. No question about it."
