You are cordially invited to attend the Coronado JazzFest, held at Coronado School of the Arts in Coronado, CA on Saturday, May 5th.. We are proud to continue our tradition of hosting this festival along with the San Diego State University Jazz Band conducted under the direction of Bill Yeager.
The festival is open to jazz ensembles of any size and instrumentation and we encourage all sizes. As in previous years, there will be five divisions in the festival: College/Independent, Advanced High School, Intermediate High School, Novice High School, and Middle School.
There are two ways you can participate:
Option 1: Traditional Festival performance in our main theatre or Black Box theatre. You will be given a 25 minute time slot to perform in front of a panel of professional jazz clinicians and adjudicators. Each ensemble will perform for the first half of the time slot and will spend the remainder in clinic with the adjudicators, where they will receive direct feedback on their performance. You will also receive recorded and written comments from the adjudicators after your scores have been recorded.
Option 2: Our annual “Salt and Pepper Clinic” with Bill Yeager and the SDSU Alumni Jazz Ensemble. Bill is widely recognized as one of the premier jazz educators and trombonists in the country. In this clinic, the members of the SDSU Jazz Ensemble will sit next to your students and play your charts along with them, offering each member of your band a private lesson in tone production, phrasing, articulation, and technique. At the end of the clinic, you and your students will get to hear the SDSU band perform your charts. This is a wonderful educational opportunity that always fills up fast, so be sure to get your application in early. Please note that we will no longer allow bands to book double time slots (eg. 1 hour instead of 30 minutes) unless space is available closer to the event.
All participants and guests will receive free admission to the lunch hour concert with the SDSU Jazz Band, one of the finest college jazz ensembles in America. We have space for only 40 ensembles, so please return your application form and payment as soon as possible to guarantee your group a performance time.
You will be sent an email after receipt of your application/payment with a link to schedule your performance and/or Salt and Pepper clinic timeslots.
Salt & Pepper Clinic
A limited number of bands will have the opportunity to participate in the Salt & Pepper clinic. Bill Yeager, nationally renowned jazz educator, and the SDSU Jazz Band will be conducting this clinic. Each member of your band will be teamed with a musician who plays the same instrument. First, your band plays its piece and Professor Yeager will critique the performance. Each musician then gives private suggestions to your musicians. Finally, the SDSU Jazz Band performs your music for your students. The $250 fee for the Salt & Pepper Clinic is a true bargain. This is an opportunity you won’t want your students to miss.
SDSU Jazz Band will be doing a live lunchtime performance for all to attend!
There will be a 25 minute warm-up followed by a 25 minute performance before three distinguished jazz adjudicators. Each group will be limited to three selections (no exceptions), preferably of diverse styles. Total performance time will be 15-17 minutes. The remainder of your time slot will be spent in clinic receiving immediate, direct feedback from one or more of your adjudicators. You will also receive written and digital comments. The JazzFest Entry Fee of $250
There are five ensemble classifications:
A) College or Independent (not affiliated with a school)
B) Advanced High School
C) Intermediate High School
D) Novice High School
E) Middle School
Plaques will be awarded to the top three groups in each performance category, and one will be given to the outstanding individual musician in each division. Certificates will also be given for outstanding individual musicianship. Winners will be notified by mail and all plaques will be mailed out in May.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Cancellations must be made before March 31. Cancellations after March 31 will be subject to no refund based on our ability to fill the time we have reserved for you.
